The Clothesline Muse starring Jazz Singer Nnenna Freelon, is a collaboration of Freelon with her daughter, Maya Freelon Asante, and her daughter’s mother-in-law, Dr. Kariamu Welsh. It celebrates African American culture, women’s history, the Civil Rights struggle, and the emerging labor movement through original live music, emotive dance, brilliant visual art and projections.  The story is told through the complex relationship between old-school and new cool.

The multidisciplinary theater performance combines the talents and knowledge of three incredible artists to create an evening of live dance, jazz music, spoken work, video, and interactive art. Before we were online, there was the clothesline.

The Clothesline Muse was made possible with funding by the New England Foundation for the Arts’ National Theater Project, with lead funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
