Royal Osiris Karaoke Ensemble (ROKE) describe themselves as “a musical priesthood that explores the metaphysics and mythologies of love, desire, and courtship at the end of the 20th century.” Their work represents the cutting edge of experimental performance, as they combine installation art, ritual, opera, movement, and theatre to create unique experiences for audiences in intimate settings. Their work has been presented at world-renowned performance festivals in New York, Portland, Philadelphia, and beyond.
ROKE takes an innovative approach to a world we increasingly experience digitally, through screens of varying shapes and sizes tapped into global networks. Their performances begin from the digital debris we encounter every day (e.g. a YouTube video or a dating app profile) and develop into complex investigations of the comedy and tragedy of our contemporary lives. Performance Studies scholar, Dr. Jen Parker-Starbuck (University of Roehampton, London) recently wrote of their work in Contemporary Theatre Review, “Keep an eye out for this company as they continue to channel their inspiration through the ‘magic’ of media.”
ROKE’s visit to TAMU and Bryan/College Station provides a unique and exciting opportunity for those interested in seeing new and compelling performance at the forefront of experimentation across disciplines and with a variety of technologies and media.
The Art Of Luv is a project of Creative Capital and AWESOME GROTTO was commissioned by and created with the support of Abrons Arts Center.
