SHE, a Choreoplay, is the vision of dancer, choreographer and playwright Jinah Parker. SHE, a Choreoplay: Sexual Violence, Sandra Bland, Healing - Demo 2017
The best way to describe SHE is
THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES meets FOR COLORED GIRLS. SHE is about sexual violence against women and girls, it is about what happens to women like Sandra Bland, it is about all women and girls, and it is about empowerment and healing. It is about our mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters. There is dance, there are monologues and dialogue between the women, there is music, there is film, there is truth-telling in ways we feel break new ground in theater.
As you may know 1 out of 4 American women and girls are the victims of some form of sexual violence in their lifetimes. Globally, it is 1 out of 3, or over ONE BILLION women and girls who have met sexual/gender violence in some form, mainly and usually at the hands of men and boys.
Whether you identify as a woman or a man or neither, whether you have a daughter or daughters, or whether you simply know survivors, as many of us do, I think you would agree that violence, in all forms, against women and girls on our planet is at epidemic proportions, which is why SHE is so important.
What is so different about SHE, and Jinah’s vision, is that it is not just an artistic piece, but also a community gathering. The way Jinah has shaped SHE means the community is very much a part of this process.
Supporters of “SHE” include The Vagina Monologues creator Eve Ensler, film and television star Gabrielle Union, and Parity Productions. Acclaimed writer, activist, and cultural curator Kevin Powell is the producer of "SHE." ELLE Magazine serves as the official Media Partner.
